And, deep down, nothing has changed since that day. You need only arrive from Corsica by ferry to reconnect with this story. Or, more simply still, return from a night of fishing off the Estaque. When the harbour opens its arms to you, then, only then, do you discover the eternal meaning of this city. Welcome.\"<\/em><br \/>Jean-Claude Izzo, Marseille.<\/p><p>At the gates of Marseille, the Frioul Islands, four limestone outcrops swept by the mistral, hold the remnants of its past: <strong>the islands of Pom\u00e8gues and Ratonneau<\/strong>\u00a0were once the compulsory quarantine stop for all ships arriving from Africa and Asia.<br \/>As for the<strong>\u00a0Ch\u00e2teau d'If<\/strong>, a magnificent fortress built by Fran\u00e7ois I, it became famous through Alexandre Dumas's novel The Count of Monte Cristo, and watches over \u00cele Degaby<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-91c4270 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"91c4270\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\"><div class=\"elementor-widget-container\"><div class=\"elementor-text-editor elementor-clearfix\"><p><span style=\"color: #1569ae; font-family: Marcellus, sans-serif; font-size: 20px; font-weight: 600;\">The Calanques of the C\u00f4te Bleue<\/span><\/p><div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-350f735 elementor-drop-cap-yes elementor-drop-cap-view-default elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"350f735\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-settings=\"{&quot;drop_cap&quot;:&quot;yes&quot;}\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\"><div class=\"elementor-widget-container\"><div class=\"elementor-text-editor elementor-clearfix\"><p><strong>The C\u00f4te Bleue<\/strong>, located west of Marseille, is the stretch of coastline running from l'Estaque to La Couronne. This \"C\u00f4te Bleue\", whose name refers to the colour of the waters surrounding the massif, is an ideally sheltered spot when the mistral blows.<\/p><p>The<b> Calanques of the C\u00f4te Bleue <\/b>are less well known than those of Marseille and Cassis, and are therefore not part of the <strong>Calanques National Park<\/strong>. <br \/>Yet Marseillais love the beaches to the west of the city just as much as those to the east, and the luckiest among them own a cabanon there. The Calanques of the C\u00f4te Bleue are highly prized by diving enthusiasts, who never miss the famous \"oursinades\" (sea urchin feasts).<\/p><p>There are few roads and access is quite difficult, so exploring by sea remains the best way to enjoy this splendid coastline, with remarkable views over the Bay of Marseille and the Frioul archipelago. The <strong>small harbours<\/strong> of <strong>La Vesse<\/strong>, <strong>Niolon<\/strong>, <strong>M\u00e9jean<\/strong>, <strong>Figui\u00e8res<\/strong> or <strong>La Redonne<\/strong> are typical of the spirit of the Calanques.<br \/>From <strong>Carry le Rouet<\/strong> at <strong>La Couronne<\/strong>, the coastline becomes less rugged and the seafront turns more towards seaside tourism.
